Hi,
Been playing since i was 13, 40 now.
Grew up playing Schenker, UFO, Sabbath, Scorpions, AC/DC etc., - biggest influence was Michael Schenker. Now into Zakk Wylde, Vai, Satriani to name just a few
Self taught by playing along to records of the above, "parrot fashion" note for note - my biggest mistake EVER!!! Now thats all I can do, copy. I´m a walking Xerox machine for guitar.
I am now incapable of the following:
- Being creative and writing my own music
- Improvising over the most basic of chord shapes, no imagination whatsoever, even basic blues
- Following a rhythm, unless its down picking thrash, Metallica style (I feel I have no sense of rhythm)
- I cannot sing and play over so much as 3 chords, I cant even talk and play let alone sing.
- Complete mental block around scales and how to remember and use them
- Applying structure to my practices
Above is what I want to remedy and am starting from the basics...Again. How to use a metronome, and have been following Ivan Milenkovic basic pentatonic lessons.
Can I play? Yes, i think so. Note for note I can play anything from Randy Rhoads´s "Dee" to pretty much anything by Metallica...But its more like guitar karaoke. And I wouldnt say I play it with any sort of conviction or feeling, I just play it.
Any thoughts on a direction, what should my daily practice routine look like (can spare half hour to an hour a day only, due to work commitments) would be greatly appreciated or if any of you guys made a similar mistake when learning and how did you get yourself out of it.
Cheers
Lee
