Original lesson: Classic Funk by Javier Aviles

Hi GMC

I Gave the best of myself.

Very good MisterM!

Good job. I liked the dry sound of your guitar, it added to your picking pressing increases the impact of the chord. You did a good job in both, the chords and the solo phrase.

Overall very good, good rhythm, good groove.

You're a Funkyman!
Thank you for working my video.

I will add your video to my youtube channel.

Hi MisterM,
Now this much better in the rhythmic aspect, only I give you a tip: hitting the strings with your right hand to give more beat, the "death" notes create rhythm in the silences of music.
More feeling in your playing.
Gracias amigo!

First of all, thank you, MisterM!
I'm glad you're brave to record your videos, and that you like mine. I like to see the different approach that you give to my song.

I agree with Ben, Darius and Gabriel about the things that can make it sound even more expressive.

You play very softly, you need picking from soft to harder and then will increase your dynamics. Also I miss a little more groove, the notes you play are as important as those that do not play, silence and death notes are essential in the groove, work it!

For me dynamic, vibrato and groove are essentials to play with feeling, work it!

I add this video on my youtube channel...

Hi Guys,

Here's my take of this beautiful Soul guitar lesson. Thanks and keep 'm coming Javier!

btw, I tune in D

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Hello friend. What a pleasant surprise.
First I congratulate you on your music arrangements.
I like that you did as you see it, personally. I like your sound, the neck pickup on your guitar, sounds different. I like your pronounced vibratos and your feeling. I like the way you've solved the sweeping chord FMajor7. I have nothing to correct you, I prefer a version that an imitation.

I add it to "favorite videos" in my youtube channel ...

Thanks!!

a break in my routine to learn this amazing song!
thanks Javier.

Vaya sorpresa me has dado Huargo!

What a surprise you gave me Huargo!
Glad to hear this song in the hands of another great guitarist like you. Although it sounds different, I like that because you have given your personality, which is more important to me to touch exactly like me. Music has its own life and every performer must make their own way.
I miss harmonics 0:56, I understand that it must have done for not having enough volume to sustain and gain your sound. And I've also noticed that major seventh note at the end, it also gives you a personal point.
Thanks for your time to learn this song.

.J'aimerais comprendre comment tu as fais.

Comment fais tu ?

Merci beaucoup.
Bye

Hellow, I do not speak French but I'll answer with google translator.
Hi I'am Javier and I have a video with SLIDE http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Slide-Rock/

My secret to mute the other strings when you play just one is to use your right hand palm muting after playing each note with the pick. Go slow at first but something patience.
Another thing that helps is often the slide lift and separate the strings every note, this is more difficult, I know.
Another thing is to choose the right scale with the bottleneck, try to avoid inclined intervelos between strings, I mean touching the scale may vertical interval and horizontal movements. Need some theory to explain, but I will in future videos for GMC not worry. You have to change the way you play the scales.
One trick to correct this is to use a more low frequecy sound, I select the treble pickup and put tone pot down.
Another way to help is to use a porcelain or glass bottleneck, something that sounds drowning.

Hope that helps. Greetings!

Espero verte en mis próximos videos de Slide!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello GMC,
I am new here and I am looking forward to improve my guitar playing. I am especially interested in blues, classic rock and jazz. I've been playing guitar for almost 3 years but I only improved in my first year of playing. I just got my first electric guitar. What would you suggest me to improve my soloing? I want to be able to play solos from songs on guitar easily, improvise a bit and understand how scales work. Thank you.

Elmir.

Hello. My advice is to do everything at once. Improve chords, technique and improvisation with scales. Do not want to take much, just a little of each and work it well: a few chords, the two basic scales (major and pentatonic) and one or two techniques at a time. When you improve is indicated that you learn a new chord and another technique, and so again and again ... The main thing is to play a lot, get the music of your favorite bands and learns to play his songs (in a simple way), that you will advance ... And of course, you can also follow my videos ...
Greetings!

Or oldies like Eagles or beatles. Which instructor could help me the most ? Thanks smile.gif

Hellow friend. I am a professor at GMC quite recently and I can only offer one of my videos Visit My Website where you can learn how to use the hybrid picking technique in acoustic guitar, which is playing with fingers and pick the strings.
I am a Beatles fan like you, I take note and will soon prepare a video for your acoustic needs. Welcome!

Hi there,

My name is lo and I have recently joined the community.

I have been playing guitar on and off for many years. Played with various bands, from rock covers (RHCP, RATM, GnR, Metallica, Stones, etc...) to drum and bass/electronica stuff.

My 2.5 years old twins are finally giving me enough spare time so I ca grab my guitars again, exciting times.

I've never really studied the guitar nor had lessons before but now is the time for a fresh start and I have found already some great tutorials.

I broke my left wrist in a motorbike accident last year and my main focus right now is to get it back to "shape".

Anyways, I'm glad I joined, it is a good place to be wink.gif

Cheers.

PS: any instructors in Australia's time zone?

Wellcome... 'bubblebeat'

QUOTE (Ben Higgins @ Dec 28 2012, 12:05 PM) *
I would say that most of us here have a particular style or genre that we spend most of our time playing in. We might describe ourselves as a rock guitar player, metal, blues, jazz etc..

However, if you were to play another style of music other than your 'main style' what would it be and why ?

I could see myself really getting into ambient, textured landscape type music.. with minimal percussion and ethereal atmosphere smile.gif As for the reason why - well, I think this type of stuff just flows very naturally and you only have to pick up your guitar, pluck a few chordal arpeggios and you've got something to play with straight away.

I remember seeing this old film called Southern Comfort with music by Ry Cooder and it was so atmospheric. It made me grab a slide, turn all the bass up on my amp and the treble waaaay down and get some boomy atmospheric stuff goin' ! That was years ago but it got me more interested in conjuring up atmospheres.

Very interesting reflection Ben ...
I play guitar because it comes naturally and easily, but let me make a confession: I'm not a guitarist! I do not feel guitarist!
When I tell that to my guitar students, they say I'm crazy, they dont understand as I can say that. But I tell you that I'm a musician more than a guitarist.
What I really enjoy is composing symphonic music for movie soundtracks. I studied piano at the conservatory and is the instrument fills me most, I think the most complete to express music. And after that I really like the section of violins, violas, cellos and basses in a classical orchestra is what makes me feel in another world.
I enjoy composing classical music, I enjoy playing the piano. The guitar whenever I like less ...
And like you, I enjoy when I hear a musical texture, as if time stopped and you feel like floating.

Music is music over styles and instruments!

QUOTE (ConnorGilks @ Dec 30 2012, 02:18 AM) *
Well, I suppose it's not a dilemma by definition... but I'm having trouble deciding on something. Let me explain...

For the past few years I had worked hybrid picking into my playing quite naturally over time (never really practiced it, just got quite good at it quite quick while goofing around), and I do pull it out on occasion to pull off some cool/unique licks or just to get a certain sound.

I feel like there's a lot more cool stuff I can do with it when it comes to licks and unique approaches to the guitar, but the reason I don't use it more is because I don't like the sound. Now, I do use hybrid picking because I feel that twang and aggression is necessary sometimes, so that's when I use it of course. But on the other hand I see guys like Brett Garsed, Guthrie Govan and Marshall Harrison that have amazing hybrid picking technique, where you don't get the twang, it's just a very soft attack.

Now of course I know it's partly the tone they use, but it's mostly technique from what I've heard from Harrison and Garsed. So here's my question, do I practice both types of hybrid picking where all the notes are uniform (same volume and attack, without the twang) and the aggressive country style hybrid picking, or should I just use a pick for the licks where I want an even sound? It's a bit tougher, but it's a much more even tone if I use a pick. It just requires more dexterity with my picking hand when it comes to playing the same licks.

Thoughts?

Originally the guitar was played with the fingers, not with the pick. The electric guitar and modern techniques have changed that. But I think the pure music, classical, acoustic, no amps, is the most human sounding. I think using the hybrid picking give our instrument achieves a more human expression. I use it almost always helps me feel closer to my guitar, more in touch with her. How do you play it? As you want. When should you use it? When you feel like. The important thing is to get a personal sound of the guitar at all times. No rules, feel free to do so or not.

You have a very interesting and diverse style. I look forward to seeing more from you, in various styles.

derper, glad to find another fan of guitars PARKER. I do not understand why they have such a bad press, but since I found my Deluxe, I found my ultimate guitar. From you I want to study and works your way to arrange the songs, I feel fantastic, you create a special atmosphere in your creations. Very good composer!
