If we have this simple melody: C, D, E We can harmonize this with one chord. A chord which contains the start point © and the stop point (E). Start with chords from tonality of C . So, this chord could be (in order from each step. C or CM7 or C6 or CM9 or CM11 or CM13 Dm9 or Dm6,9 Em7(b9, b13) FM7 or FM9 or FM9(#11) G13 Am or Am7 or Am9 or Am 11 Bm11(b5,b9) the following track begins with the melody without chord and then harmonize this melody using CM7 - Dm9 - Em(b9) - FM7 - G13 - Am9 - Bm11(b5,b9) progression. melody.mp3 ( 1.48MB ) Number of downloads: 359 not necessarily to have all the notes in the chord. for example, if you have C, D, E in melody, and play Em7(b9) wich contains E, G, B, D, F, the melody with harmony create the full chord : E, G, B, D, F, A, C - Em7(b9,b13). enjoy! |

The first "rule" for improvising is to use the notes of the scale so that just the notes that are in the chord to be on the hard beat. hard beats means if we have a 4/4 bar: 1 and 3 secondary beats are 2 and 4. The second important "rule" is that the phrase begins and ends on one of the chord note. I use quotation marks for "rule" because in music there are no rules. |

I start with C natural major scale. It has 7 modes. I - Ionian II - dorian III - phrygian IV - Lydian V - Mixolydian VI - eolian VII - locrian Mode means a different sound using the same notes (C,D,E,F,G,A,B ) Harmonizing the major scale we have 7 basic chords: C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am, Bdim The chords are formed by overlapping thirds. These chords have 3 notes. Overlapping one more third over these chords, we have: CM7, Dm7, Em7, FM7, G7, Am7, Bm7(b5) These chords have 4 notes Overlapping one more third over the 7th chords, we have: CM9, Dm9, Em7(b9), FM9, G9, Am9, Bm7(b5,b9) These chords have 5 notes. Overlapping one more third over the 9th chords, we have: CM11, Dm11, Em11(b9), FM9(#11), G11, Am11, Bm11(b5,b9) These chords have 6 notes Overlapping one more third over the 11th chords, we have: CM13, Dm13, Em11(b9,b13), FM13(#11), G13, Am11(b13), Bm11(b5,b9,b13) These chords have 7 notes |

There are six important scales we must know: natural major scale, harmonic major scale, melodic major scale natural minor scale, harmonic minor scale, melodic minor scale I recommend to study the major scales on C major and the minor scales on Am scale, because they are relatives. In fact they both use the same audible material. Each of them has two different ways: harmonic and melodic For major scale: harmonic means b6 melodic means b6 and b7 For minor scale: harmonic means #7 melodic means #6 and #7 |

the scale degree of the note gives you tonal thinking, which is very important. in this way you can create relations between scales and chords. but both methods are ok, knowing the notes name and the scale degree of the notes. |

sounds dramatic, as the title is. In this point, you can go in any direction. Depending on the arrangement of the song how you develop this idea. I'm curious about that. Please update when you finish the arrangement. I feel this sounds good in 6/8 time signature, but it's just a suggestion. |

study the major scale, for major example, in thirds, fourths, fives... octaves and then play it on different rhythmic variations: quaters, eights, sixteenth, triplets and combinations of these, using a metronome or else. Combine them how you want, free your mind and let your fingers "dance" on the fingerboard, without fear. Just if you experiment yourself each scale, you will find interesting combinations of intervals, which gives you different "moods". Even the mistakes could be great ideas for a composition. Music is the alternance between tension and relax. Find these by your own exploring the scale and then use it to express yourself in music. Play on instrument what you hear in your mind. It's not easy, but worths all the time in the world to practice this. |

try to create phrases which you hear in your mind over bactrack or over any progression, and then try to put them on the guitar. At first you will find it hard to do, even impossible, but little by little, you'll get used to it. I descovered in time that this is the secret of playing an instrument: to have the desired music in your mind and then play it on the instrument. |

So far as amp settings and other effects, any idea what they use? And Frederick's technique during his solos seems to be pretty unique. I'm not quite sure what exactly he's doing during songs like "Dancers to a Discordant System" for the opening and such. That's another one of the areas i'm having trouble with. Thanks for the advice! Frederick's technique during his solo is influenced by Allan Holdsworth style, but with different attitude. |
