Great lesson man. Although if I am making intonation adjustments I would de tune the string prior to moving the intonation screw to take the tension off the string. Maybe I'm wrong?
It's great that Marcus had this idea - it's a much debated topic, ain't it?
Greetings Marcus
Thank you so much for fantastic explanation!
Cris
Hi Marcus i just made the setup first time in Life and it works great -- thank you very much !

Hi Marcus !
What a great lesson and the first time for me that i seriously thinking about to try this adjusting by my self .
My old Epi LP junior must get first into this experience before i try it with other guitars .
Thank you a lot !
I'll really appreciate this lesson. I came back for a refresher. getting my guitar into perfect intonation.
Very usefull lesson ! I always have intonation problems (due to my recent mistake which was changing all string at once) so I buy new strings ASAP and I'll check this out
I have to admit that I don't really like this oil thing for my fretboards, I tried it once and was not really happy, but yes, in theory, if you want to do this you should take off all your strings. A Tonepros locking system can be awesome here (in the moment I am thinking about getting it for some of my guitars). And yes, loosening the strings when adjusting the intonation is not bad at all.
I agree about the changing your strings one at a time, but what about cleaning the fretboard with lem oil? Don't you have to take them all off for that? Also, when adjusting the intonation, should I loosen the strings? I mean, isn't that string sliding in that groove not good for it? Anway, great lesson! Very informative.
Thanks again guys
Brilliant, useful, extremely necessary!!
One of the 'must do' lessons, well done Marcus
This lesson will leave lot of luthiers out of work, excellent explanations and lesson Marcus
Why give your guitar to somebody else to set it up when you can also do it yourself ;-) This topic is very important to me, cause after all all of our playing abilities are useless if our guitars sound constantly out of tune, so everybody should be able to check things like this.
Wow, this is a great topic! A lot of new guitarists have similar problems, this is a lesson that will help them a lot!
This a very useful topic, and super well expalined. Thanks Marcus!
No more paying for setting up my guitar! Poor luthier guy, he really seemed happy to have my schecter for few days from time to time:D
Great explanation, it worked!
thanks guys :-)
Great lesson Marcus! I have to check my guitars intonation now, though I think it should be 'right since I've tried to keep it adjusted.
Wow Marcus.. You're so clever coming up with lessons that nobody else here makes. This is essential to novice and intermediate players and I hope everyone checks this out. Thank you on behalf of everyone here Marcus
This is very useful, because i think a lot of players don't know how to do this. I guess I will give it a try one of the days of this week
YEAH! Another Marcus Siepen hand work lesson I loved the pup-change lesson, so this will be cool as well. I love the humor in these lessons
Thanks guys, and I agree, we should really know our instruments
Thanks Marcus !!! I will adjust my intonation today ....
that's right lian, it is SUPER important to know your guitar upsidedown, priceless lesson marcus!
this is really really awesome Marcus. I personally think that this is an important part of the road to become a great guitarist, you always can send your guitar to a luthier, but, to know your guitar in detail it's priceless! I think that's the way to get a real connexion with your instrument. thanks for this add!
Very useful!
Thanks guys. I also find this topic very important, when I started to play guitar I had no clue about intonation, I just put on any strings, messed with the string action and wondered, why my chords sounded so strange
This is an awesome addition to GMC.. a must see lesson. Thanks Marcus.. This was very well presented
Thanks for this topic and great explanations Marcus - nothing is more frustrating than playing with a poorly intonated guitar!
Hi everybody, welcome to another lesson here on GMC.
Today I will show you how to check and adjust your guitars intonation. In case you have no idea what a guitars intonation is, in simple words a guitar with a bad intonation will never be in tune properly, so this is something we should definitely avoid.
Since a lot of things can mess with our guitars intonation (for example changing the string action, using a different gauge of stings, going to a completely different tuning etc.) You should check the intonation from time to time and adjust it in case something is wrong, and I hope this lesson can be a help for you ;-)
In case you have any question, feel free to contact me.
Cheers
Marcus
PS: The equipment used for this lesson is a Les Paul Slash Goldtop, a set of new strings, a Korg DT-1 tuner and a screwdriver ;-)
