    Diminished chords are harmonic doors. Although we usually use them as passing chords to provide chromatic movement in diatonic progressions, diminished chords have many harmonic possibilities.

    In this video I will show you how to use a diminished chord to obtain different dominant chords and how to go to the new key signature or tonality with this modulation. The process is as follows:

    On the chord of the starting tonality I create a diminished 7 chord. This chord is made up of four notes: C (1), Eb (b3), Gb (b5) and A (= bbB or bb7). Due to the symmetry of the diminished chord, each of these notes can be the bass of another diminished chord that will also contain the rest of these four notes. Therefore, we have four diminished chords with the same function: C dism7, Eb dism7, Gb dism7, A dism7.

    The next step is to replace each of these diminished chords with another chord that contains 3 of its four notes and has the dominant function of the new tone to which we are going to go. Our tone modulation will be as follows:

    C -> C dism7 -> B7 -> E
    C -> Eb dism7 -> D7 -> G
    C -> Gb dism7 -> F7 -> Bb
    C -> A dism7 -> Ab7 -> Db
