Welcome to my new lesson, in the style of Dio!
THE PROFESSOR As you can hear in this video, shredded expertly by Ben, mixing minor pentatonic scales and the natural minor scale is a powerful combination when learning, writing or soloing over metal tracks. Bands such as Dio, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and others all wrote killer riffs and recorded massive solos using a mixture of minor pentatonic and Aeolian modes on the guitar.
To get these crunchy sounds under your fingers, make sure you have a strong handle on the Aeolian Mode for Guitar, as well as a secure understanding of the Minor Pentatonic Scale and it’s role in riffage and lead playing.

To most of you, Ronnie James Dio should need no introduction. He was well established in the world of hard rock / heavy metal by the time he formed his band and released 'Holy Diver' in 1983. His guitar player was Vivian Cambell (now with Def Leppard), who played with him on the first 3 Dio albums. The music itself is full of incredibly tight riffing, with power chords making up the majority of them.
