Fusion Rhythm For Beginners

Hi GMC'ers! This is an example of a rhythm fusion style composition. Many times people ask me how to approach this musical style, regarding composition and improvisation. This is a challenge because the musical genre is derived in part from jazz funk and rock, and carries all the complexities of these styles.

For this example, paying attention to the chord progression is one way to approach composition. Another option is called “through compose”: parts are added up and not just in A-A-B-A form.

Let´s check out these three sections: the first part corresponds to the harmonic section which uses a melody based on F- Phrygian with chords formed on perfect fourths, backed up by a lead guitar underlining the melody. The second section is in Ab lydian using a reharmonization of the IV and V grade of the tonal key corresponding to the mode, using as always this tonic on the bass. The third section is a simple melody circling the F# lydian mode.
