  • Hi GMCers, this is my second lesson and it's all about GrOOOve !

    A groove is a combination of musical patterns in which everyone in the band feels and plays to a common pulse and this creates a sense of unity and momentum.The rhythm section- /drums,bass,keyboard,guitars/ usually,anything that can play chords- lays down the groove's dynamic and rhythmic feel...     But solo instruments can play grooves also. The trick is to start simple and build it. Try starting with a really simple groove, maybe two three notes a bar.

    Its also worth trying to throw out short rhythmic phrases and try and get the rest of the rhythm section to jump on them, that always sounds cool during a solo!

    Start building on that groove but try to keep the basic foundation there. Sometimes its interesting to play a guitar solo with just the drums as backing and then ignore the changes and sometimes the form.

    If you build your solo to this point and the fill is nice and tight its a wonderful feeling. Improvisation (like this one )is the invention of a solo.

    Two major points you should know before you start improvising over a backing tracks - when you should play, and much important- what notes will sound good !
