Melody is what keeps the listener interested in you song. Without it, there are few chances that someone will want to hear your song again. That is because the human ear takes pleasure in something he recognizes. In today's lesson will try to construct a melodic theme to a chord progression in B minor.
Let's start by taking a look at the chord progression of the track:
Bm D/A Bm D Bm D Bm F#
Bm D/A Bm F# Bm A Bm Bm
Bm D/A Bm D Bm D Bm F#
Bm D/A Bm F# Bm A Bm Bm
A A/E D D/A A A/E D D
A A/E D D/A A A/E Bm Bm
Bm D/A Bm D Bm D Bm F#
Bm A Bm F# Bm F# Bm Bm
All the chords work in the key of B natural minor except for the F# Major chord which should normally be minor if we were staying in B natural minor. Whenever that chord comes, simply change the minor 7th of B to a Major 7th (or simply avoid the 7th to be safe!).
Practice slowly and be precise and accurate. When you are comfortable with the suggested theme, use the looped backing track to create your own melody!
