This technique isn't really too complicated it's just looks that way because of the fast movements but in reality it's all about relaxing the right hand. When tempo gets faster, right hands starts to stiffen up more and more. This make the strumming unprecise and uneven. So in order to build speed, just practice everything slowly, and precisely, and it will come gradually, with time. There is no way to push it to 130bpm in 5 days, but in 5 weeks more/less it can be done no problem, if you maintain a steady flow of exercising, so just be patient, and know that results are right there around the corner, and they will come sooner than we actually think. - BMcG22nd October 2008
Hi Ivan,
Great lesson, thanks. I wanted to ask you about the development of right hand technique for this type of style. Is it something you worked on over time or did it come naturally? I have a hard time keeping even 16th goings for very long at much above 100 bpm. This lesson seems to be somewhere around 130 bpm, which is the bmp domain of a lot other funky guitar that I'd like to learn (Jamiroquai, Nile Rodgers, etc.)
Do you have some suggestions on how to build that type of right hand funk strumming speed/endurance?

Well, I started playing when I was about 15-16 years old, now I'm 24. I don't know how much I practiced, but I made some big breaks during the periods and wasn't too consistent sometimes unfortunately. I am trying to be as consistent as I can be now, because competition is hard and oen must really be prepared for some serious work in order to be a good player.
Pushing the limits is something that happens on occasions, not immediately. For me it was always like practicing a couple of months and then seeing the result one day out of the blue. Also, it can pass a year and you don't feel the progress and then one day all the sudden you feel how you play noticeably better. So my advice is be patient when it seems that you are not progressing. In those times almost always you are on the verge to push the limit up, and move to the next level. Practice hard and don't worry the results will always come when you least expect them. - boni4210th May 2008
Hey Ivan i see you are a masterclass guitarist and was wondering if you could tell me how many years you have been playing, how much playing and practice a week you did before you got proficient. I practice hard maybe 16 hours a week for over 5 years and really wonder if I will ever get to the masterclass stage like you.

Hi guys, welcome to very first 101 lesson! :) Today we are going to talk about skunk funk technique.
Now, I don't really know why it is called a skunk funk technique, but it sounds cool enough for me. It is not basically anything special but it is a great technique to master and know how to use. It consists of right hand strumming and left hand muting, in such a manner that all the strings that are not fretted are raked all the time.
Before we start I must apologize because of my bad English language. I really tried to make this lesson the best I could, but it is very hard to speak in a foreign language and show playing on the guitar. So please forgive me, I hope you will find the lesson useful and I will constantly try to improve my English and 101 lessons so it sounds much more professional and easy to follow. Thanks for understanding! :)
