  • Hi everybody, Joe Kataldo here with another request lesson, this time Tool under the spotlight.

The idea comes AGAIN :D (hey Tool is one of my favorite band) from a request of one of our friends "Unleash-The-Shred", he asked for a lesson in the style of Tool and here we are.

Check also this other lesson on Drop D

    This Lesson Will Improve
    ------------------------

    Right hand picking

    Palm muting

    "Drop D" Riffing

    Left hand legato

    Tool Style 110 BPM
    ------------------

The study is in "Drop D" as most of the Tool songs, the key is D minor alternating between different modes to create interest along the track.
The Lesson feature fast riffing and power chords rhythm plus some remarkable rhythmic cell, that you can hear in many tool's album, especially "10.000 days":

A sixteenth-note triplets followed by two sixteenth-notes, played with legato and starting from the open strings

The tempo is fast, you really have to practice it slowly before attempt the full speed, the middle section feature also some odd time signatures (see theory focus)

    Recommended Listening
    ---------------------

Well...TOOL, Aenima, Lateralus & 10,000 days are my favorite :D

    Theory Focus
    ------------

Music that falls in the odd time category is usually a combination of common rhythms played in the same measure of music.
For example a seven beat rhythm may consist of 3 beat pattern followed by 4 beat pattern.

This way you can accommodate your riff/arpeggio to your creativity

    .Bar thirteenth:

I've used 5/4 time signature beamed in 3+3+4
    count: one-two-three one-two-three one-two-three-four

    .Bar Fourteenth

    I've used 7/8 beamed in 3+2+2

    Count: one-two-three one-two one two

Don't be afraid if you are not comfortable with it, listen several times to the video and the odd meter part will fit naturally

    Techniques Focus
    ----------------

To make this riff sound tight you have to calibrate the pressure on the bridge saddles to archive a good palm muting

More requests, more in style lessons, so...what are you waiting for? :D
