In today's lesson we'll combine many different scale tricks to create a cool fusiony improv. The track starts in B Dorian, the modulated to C# Dorian to come back on B Dorian at the end.
Besides the Dorian scale, we'll also use several pentatonic scales. One of the tricks that I like to do is to use pentatonics a little out of context. For example, while playing in B Dorian, I will use B minor pentatonic, but also C# minor pentatonic. Why C#? Because if you analyze all the notes of C# minor pentatonic, you'll find that they all are found within B Dorian.
We'll also use a bit of the whole tone scale and chromatic scale to create extra tension.
To avoid confusion, I wrote the scales that you'll be using over the first key of the song while playing in B Dorian. That means that you'll have to play the same scales a whole step up (2 frets up) during the modulation in C# Dorian.
Work slowly on the following examples and try to use these ideas in your music. Remember that this lesson was an improvisation originally, that gives you a good example hopefully of how you should be thinking while improvising.
