Today's modern guitar music wouldn't be the same without Steve Vai. He has inspired many kids to pick up the guitar and strive to excellency. Today we will study his style and try to approach his solo playing.
Today's lesson can be split in parts. The first one will represent Vai's technical shred style playing. In that first section, we'll use F# minor pentatonic and G Lydian. As you can hear there is a slight modulation between these two keys.
Then we'll explore Steve's melodic style. There are several modulations in that second part, but you should use your ear instead of scales to here.
As always, once you learned these licks, apply them to you own music and be creative.
