  • Hi and welcome to my new lesson. I decided to do something a bit crazy this time and imagine what it might sound like if Joe Satriani & Steve Vai were to play over some death metal.

I've covered some licks in the style of both Joe Satriani and Steve Vai before so if this is your kind of thing I recommend you check those out as well to pick up some vital legato licks and some phrasing in the Lydian and Mixolydian modes.

Death metal is an extreme sub genre of heavy metal. Traditional death metal, popularised by bands such as Morbid Angel, features lots of fast double kick drumming, blast beats and tremolo guitar picked riffs. They typically use dark sounding modes such as the Phrygian Major but also make use of atonal riffs that combine notes not found in a scale together.

The key point of this lesson is to try and combine the melodic playing of Joe and Steve with the typically non melodic world of death metal. You will work on:

    -Legato
    -Modal knowledge
    -Vibrato
    -Sliding
    -Pick tapping
    -Tapped harmonics

So, if you always wondered what it would sound like if Surfing With the Alien, Passion & Warfare and Altars of Madness were to have a jam session then this lesson is for you !
