  • Hello GMC'ers! Welcome to the first part of this series called "Legato Workshop". In this series we'll see legato lessons for beginner and intermediate level.

We will detail all the variations of this technique, as well as study the different harmonic and melodic aspects. Legato is a technique that has always been used by guitarists of almost every style, but one of the artists that stands out the most is Alan Holdsworth. These are some other great “legato players” of all genres: from Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brett Garsed, and Alex Machacek.

We will cover the most basic patterns, as well as simple melodic elements like the major scale and a bit of modal playing. Muting is also of utmost importance in this technique. This will allow us to obtain a clear and clean sound. We mute the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings with the the palm of the right hand when playing the 1st, 2nd or 3rd, and with the inner part of the left hand we need to mute the first strings when playing the lower notes. We will deal specifically with the aspect of timing, and mastery of major scale positions with moderate difficulty.
