Hey GMC'ers! This time I´m bringing a progressive metal riff. This is one of my favorite styles to compose and develop ideas, which I mainly use in my band Pronoia. Progressive metal offers lots of interesting tools.
For instance, in the first part of this exercise the lead guitar plays an arrangement while the band develops another idea in the background, creating different climates and feelings as the song advances. Later, in the second part and after a short bridge, all the instruments share the same scenario although they never lose their own special, individual phrasing.
The second riff is composed in the G Phrygian scale. I also used some patterns from the E Minor Harmonic scale to turn this Phrygian into a "darker shade of dark". Dissonances are also worth investigating. You have some of them in this lesson for your pleasure!
