THE PROFESSOR In this heavy riffing lesson, thrashed with ease by Ben, you are diving deep into the shred style of master riffers Testament. Besides the technical issues that you will need to address when learning to play in this style, there is also the matter of learning how to play and use the mode being featured in this lesson, Phrygian Major or otherwise known as the 5th Mode of the Harmonic Minor Scale.

Getting the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor (Phrygian Major) under your fingers, knowing how it is built and figuring out where you can use it are all important steps when soloing, writing riffs and learning to play in the style of Testament, Slayer and other bands.

Welcome to my Testament style lesson!

"Testament is an American thrash metal band from Berkeley, California, who formed in 1983. They are often credited as one of the most popular bands of the 1980s thrash metal scene. To date, Testament has released ten studio albums, four live albums, six compilation albums, and six singles. After signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1986, they released their debut album The Legacy in 1987 to critical acclaim." - Wikipedia

Testament's guitar style is characterised by fast thrash allied to harmonised guitars, using Phrygian Major modes. In this lesson you will encounter 3 of their most recognisable traits, which is the thrash elements, the fast groove riff and the harmonised 3rd licks.
