Hi GMC!
Welcome to my new lesson based on the style of Trivium, an American metalcore band from Orlando, Florida formed in 2000. The band members are Matt Heafy (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Corey Beulieu (lead guitar), Paolo Gregoletto (Bass guitar) and Nick Augusto (Drums). They have released 6 studio albums and sold more than 1 million of albums wordwide.
Music Style:
The first time that I listened to this band I felt like if I were listening to a Metalcore version of Metallica. Both the musical style and the vocals made me remember Hetfield’s band. Their music evolved with the pass of time and nowadays they have their own personality. They are defined as Metalcore but they also have influences from Thrash, Progressive, Groove and Melodic Death Metal. In this lesson I tried to re-recreate their most aggressive and newer style.
Tonality, Chord Progression & Scales:
The tune is in D minor, and most of the riffs are based on D minor and D harmonic minor scales. We can say that this are their most used scales as happens with most of the aggressive metal bands and even with classic Thrash Metal bands like Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth, in other words, their biggest influences.
Techniques:
This is a rhythm lesson, so it’s great for metal lovers who want to make their riffing abilities tighter.
The techniques that we will use in this lesson are palm muting, alternate picking, only down strokes, legato and slides.
Sound:
I used my Pod HD 500 to create a tone based on Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier Amp and Head.
The drums have been recorded using SSD 3.5 and the bass with Trillian.
