  • Welcome to my new lesson. We are once again looking at soloing over a typical thrash progression that might be played by the likes of Megadeth or Anthrax.

Previously we looked at using some solo tactics popularised by players like Dave Mustaine and Kirk Hammett. This time we are adding some more complex licks used by Alex Skolnick and Marty Friedman.

Skolnick uses a lot of slippery legato, palm muted picking runs and is very fond of adding the flat 5th in his licks.

Friedman is an expert at inserting outside tones into his phrasing and has combined eastern modal exotica with more conventional western rock licks.

Technically, both of these dudes are in the elite guitar players to come out of the 80's metal scene and continue to record and inspire with their modern output. So, it's always a great idea to take from the best. In doing so, you will improve:

    -Legato
    -Picking
    -Arpeggio use
    -Phrasing
    -Bending
    -Metal credibility

So, if you've always struggled with knowing what licks to play over the faster of beats then this is for you!
