Welcome to my new lesson in the style of Tony MacAlpine!
THE PROFESSOR In this shredding lesson from Ben, you will learn how to mix major scale modes and a mode from the Harmonic Minor Scale in order to begin bringing a bit of that cool-sounding Tony MacAlpine sound into your riffs, licks and soloing ideas.
Learning how to mix the Lydian Mode, Aeolian Mode (aka the Natural Minor Scale), as well as the 5th mode of the Harmonic Minor Scale, also known as Phrygian Major, will allow you to play these ideas across the neck as well as give you the confidence you need to shred in this style in any situation.
Tony rose to prominence in the 80's wave of neo classical shred guitar with albums like Edge of Insanity and Maximum Security. Also an incredibly gifted pianist, Tony inserted lots of lightning fast keyboard runs alongside his guitar lines in the vein of his contemporaries Yngwie Malmsteen and Vinnie Moore but the difference was that Tony was also doing the keys on his own records!
Tony uses a lot of tapped arpeggios which are really useful for extending the range of an arpeggio. Plus they sound great!
