  • Hello my friends and welcome to this collection of licks that will work over the Dominant 7th chord. A dominant 7th chord is a chord made of a Root, Major 3rd, 5th and minor 7th. Although there are several possible scales to pick from, we'll be using the Mixolydian mode in this lesson.

To make things a bit more interesting, we'll work in two different keys. We will go back and forth between A Mixolydian and G Mixolydian. In order to give the licks a bluesy feel, you can use the minor pentatonic scale over the Dominant 7th chord you're playing over. Although the minor 3rd of the pentatonic scale will clash with the Major 3rd of the chord, it will create some nice bluesy flavor that you can use. All the licks are very applicable in many situations and should find their place in your musical vocabulary. Make sure you are comfortable with the suggested scale fingering before working on the examples.

As always, once you are comfortable with the different sections, make your own licks and apply them to the looped backing track.

Keep working hard, it will pay off!
