  • Welcome to my first widescreen lesson!

For the occasion, I decided to share with you a piece from my upcoming album. The song is called I turn to you. Although it is meant to be a vocal song, I thought the chord progression worked great to illustrate today's concept.

The idea in this lesson is to balance the amount of improvisation with some structured key points. I kind of see it as a lake you need to cross. Imagine that the backing track you need to play over is a surface of water. You have your starting point, your ending point, and you need to get from point A to point B. Depending on how good of a swimmer you are, you'll get there with more or less trouble. But th shorter you need to swim, the better you will do so. That is the same in music. In order to play over a long track, we need blocks that are prepared.

This principle is a great way to help you structure your lead. Make sure you are comfortable with the different scale positiounderneath and study the licks with attention to detail. Keep it melodic, and have fun!
