  • Hi again, its time for some riffing in odd meters. These examples comes from my metal-progressive trio BFH CD "The Gate", 58 minutes of music divided into 8 parts!

I called this "odd meter boogie". The meter is 5/4 shuffle groove with "triplet" feel, I also have prepared 2 pre-studies so you can get familiar with the triplet feel and the 5/4 meter feel! One for the right hand fingers and one for the left hand! In the end (riff D) you have 7/4 meter.

You can learn all riffs, or pick up the best pieces you like and then incorporate them into your own playing!

I play riffs A & D and prestudy A & B with my fingers to get a fatter "bity" sound but it can all be played with a pick!

You should use alternate picking, on riff C only downstrokes! Its also a simple way to change chords using 2 strings!

The form of this lesson(song) is A-B-A-B-C-D, and also
Riff A is repeated 4 times before changing to:
Riff B repeated twice (with a small change the 2nd repeat)
    Riff C is repeated twice
Riff D internally each riff is repeated twice

The riff which was in my head when I wrote it was Deep Purples "Burn" with Ritchie Blackmore on guitar! This is a great way to make you get used to odd meter riffs! You have to concentrate a lot in the beginning, the rhytm section is doing a whole bunch of different stuff while you play your riff!

Watch out switching from riff A to B changing from finger to pick!

    The guitar is tuned in drop D tuning = Lo2Hi = D,A,D,G,B,E

    Good luck!

P.s for the complete backtrax to save space I put 86bpm&96bpm on 1 mp3 and likewise for 106&116bpm!
    86bpm is from 00.00-03.26
96bpm on the same mp3 is from 03.29-06.32
    106&116bpm on the same mp3 =
    106bpm starts at 00.00-02.46
    116bpm start at 02.49-05.20

    Thatllbeallfolks!
    Mats.
