Thanks Muris,but i dont have any software to slow things down...BUT! i nearly got thru lesson today at full speed..hopefully not long now...my economy picking has improved...especially 2 note per string...that last run still gives me grief at full speed,,i blow it everytime..i hope to get a video camera sometime in the future,i would like to try and play it for you...thanks

hi Muris,,would it be to much to ask for another inbetween backing track at about 110 bpm? dont worry if this is not possible....but its seems a big jump from 90 to 130,and my brains gonna explode...thanks

wow! this is tough,ive nearly learnt all the notes..theyr taking some drilling in!! (old age i expect)plus i can just about do it to slowest backing track...

In some situations, like for me recently in learning Muris' Extreme Neoclassical lesson, it would be nearly impossible to play some of the licks quickly without using economy picking, especially the fast descending licks seem to almost force you to economy pick, also sweeps come off of economy picking more naturally, so a hard rule always to alternate pick might not be practical - just my 2 cents worth about the discussion alternate vs. economy. Great lesson, by the way, as always.

Economy picking is related to sweeping - the economy comes in when you switch strings. At all other times it is the same as alt picking.

Say you were playing 2 notes on your b string then a note on your g string ...

Alt picking would be D,U - move upwards to g string - D
Economy picking would be D,U,U (whilst moving to G string)

In this example, you move the pick up to switch strings, so in alt picking you are making an up/down movement when you switch strings and pick the note. In economy picking you combine moving from one string to the next with the picking stroke which is more econmical in movement terms, hence the name.

Its attractors say that this gives you better speed with less wasted movement, whilst its detractors say that without a strict up/down movement you lose rhythm and cannot play as precisely.

Me - I'm neutral as I can't alt pick fast enough for it to matter yet, although a couple of experiments confirm the speed AND the loss of precision for me, so you get to choose, speed or precision.

Oh, and both sides of the argument can cite master shredders who use their technique, so I guess at the end it comes down to preference, and as ever, practice

I may be mistaken but my understanding of economy picking was playing a same string in the same direction up or down twice or more times. It seems to me that muris is picking alternate at times while economically inserting triad sweep like patterns. Which in my opinion would make it easier and quicker to play it that way. I will definately have to study the patterns more though to learn them, thanks muris for the lesson.

For me dropping economy picking was one of the best things that happened to me... I still have some practice todo, to get back on track though.

However, it's obvious that economy picking is working for a lot of people!
