Hey GMC'ers! In the early 1940s the Jazz scene was changing. Musicians like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Christian, Thelonious Monk and clubs like the Minton's were the center of a new revolution. They played a new form of music, characterized by fast tempo, complicated harmonic substitutions, often with dissonant intervals and instrumental virtuosity.
In the past Jazz music was performed primary for dancing - let's think at the swing era - while with Bebop the music became a real art. The audience didn't understand quickly this new form of music because it was nervous, racing and with some new "strange" melodies.
For this lesson I chose to play a solo over the chord progression of Charile Parker's Ornithology.
You can use this scale over dominant seventh chords.
You can use this scale over major sixth and major seventh chords.
You can use this scale over minor seventh chords.
As exercise, you can analyze each lick to find the relationship between the melody and the backing chord. Feel free to ask here or on my board if you need any help.
