  • Hiya, sick people! I made this exercise inspired by two of my favorite players, Marty Friedman and Jason Becker, and their Cacophony saga. I recommend the whole solo discography of both players if you want to surf the scales adding strange metal melodies to it. Also listen to Marty's solos in Megadeth, they're epic, awesome, spectacular works!

First of all, pay attention to tuning! The whole guitar is tuned one step down, but the sixth string is in C, that means two steps down. It's more comfortable to play open chords with this tuning.

The whole thing is in G minor9, rhythmically just one part, divided into two sections which are played alternatively. The section at the beginning is composed by chords in Eb maj7, with some chords in g minor9 and D7/F# in the middle, which allows you to create lidian Mode licks on Eb maj7 in the Hirahoshi scale (typical of Mr. Friedman), Aeolic/dorian licks in G minor9 and diminished licks in D7/F#, then back to the root note and a short Phrygian bridge in A minor9.
The second section uses major arpeggios and chromatic notes, lidian mode in A Flat maj7, Diminished licks, Dorian mode in C minor9 and B Flat 7. Then the first section starts again, then comes the second once more and over and over until the end.
And in the end of the example ends in G major using a short armonic minor lick.

Hope you learn a lot with this metal modal madness solo! LOL
