  • Hi and welcome to my new lesson. This time we are doing a beginner lesson in the style of guitar legend John Petrucci, the intimidatingly stupendous axeman for Dream Theater.

Petrucci is well known for his scarily good guitar technique but he's also a great melodic player as well. In this lesson we're going to focus on this slow, melodic aspect but I've chucked in some simple picking shapes at the end as a hint for what awaits you as you delve further into his style of playing.

The things you'll want to achieve in this lesson are:

    Control of unwanted noise
    Smooth position changes
    Good timing
    Good hand synchronisation

Getting things right during the early stages of guitar playing will make it easier for you when you get to the more advanced stuff. So take the time to get it right NOW.

So, without further ado, grab your guitar and worship at the altar of Petrucci!
