  • Hello GMCers! Welcome to my legato lesson, lets exercise the left hand a little:

    Most of us like to alternate pick when we shred as it provides an aggressive sound very suitable for shredding. Legato on the other hand gives a smooth note transition, but requires a good left hand technique, right hand is there to do some picking and muting, but most notes come from hammer-ons and pull-offs.

    Left hand technique is important is very important for legato, in this lesson I used very little distortion, as the purpose is to develop strength on the left hand, doing a solo like this one in a totally clean channel would be very difficult, so a little distortion helps even out the volume of every note, heavy distortion will help even more but defeats the purpose of building strength for accurate hammer-ons and pull-offs.

    I recommend practicing this lesson like I did here, don't go extremely clean as it would be very difficult, but bring your drive down a little if you are used to heavy distortion. Find a distortion setting that allows for even volume in your legato, and bring it down a little to practice, and back up again later when feel you have conquered the lesson.

    The whole solo is in my favorite scale (A minor), there are some stretches that will force you to use your pinky and strengthen it, no way around this one
