  • Hello GMC!

Today we will see the Vibrato (first part). The vibrato is a wavelike oscillation of the pitch that you often hear when your favorite singers sustain notes. It is not just something you are born with. The vibrato always involves manipulation of your voice. Actually it is a slight variation in pitch. How do you learn it?. How does it work?

When you sing, your vocal cords normally move at the rate that ranges from a hundred to a thousand vibrations per second. The tension of the cords determines the pitch, and when that tension is perfect a slow secondary vibration begins to develop. This secondary movement causes the sound to move in a wave at the speed of five or six vibrations per second.

    Try it:
Pick your easiest sound, and then at the top instead of just holding the note, slightly dip the pitch a number of times.

Try to think of a car that won't start. If it is warm out and the battery isn't killed the started will make a quick oscillating sound. If it is cold or almost dead, the oscillation will be very slow. Six oscillations per second is generally ideal.

So… in this lesson you'll see a demonstration of the vibrato in a song (that includes harmony too). Try to listen the sustains and the vibratos in the song. In the next videos there are an exercise for develop your vibrato. We have to make your vocal cords more flexible!

By the way, I posted the main backing track in my personal board for your improvisations! I want to hear more, of course!
