Playing outside of the original key can be used to add tension and interest to your improvisations.

The only rule to follow is to remember to get back in to the original key at some point to resolve whatever musical idea you're developping.
This technique can be used in any style of music.

The following track is in C Dorian.
Try to come up with your own licks and use them in your next improvisations.
