THE PROFESSOR Learning how to build, play and apply Diminished Arpeggios and the 5th Mode of Harmonic Minor (Phrygian Major Scale) can go a long way when you are working on Rusty Cooley’s sounds in your practice routine. As you can hear in this lesson, picking plays a big part of Rusty’s sound, but so does the melodic modes and arpeggios that he choses when blazing up and down the fretboard.

Bringing Diminished Arpeggio Shapes and the Fifth Mode of Harmonic Minor into your practice routine will ensure that you are ready to tackle the sounds coming out of Rusty Cooley’s shredtastic solos and licks, such as the ones Ben expertly demonstrates in this lesson.

    Welcome to my new lesson!

I decided to go a bit crazy this time as I was inspired by the guitar playing of Rusty Cooley, who is a god of picking. I can't do what he can do but I took away the idea of playing with all 4 fingers of the fretting hand on one string. There are people like Allan Holdsworth who are known for using all fingers on the neck at once but in the world of heavy guitar / shred Rusty is the main man for this sort of thing!

So I decided to give it a go and see what I came up with. One thing that is apparent when using 4 fingers on one string is that you can play repeating triplet licks with more speed than using 2 strings. This makes sense because we don't have to cross strings so you can conserve more time.

It's not just Rusty's 4 finger approach that I shoehorned into this lesson though, I've also got some stretchy diminished triad shapes which will get your hand burning!

This lesson is not for the faint hearted so buckle up and enjoy the ride!
