  • Hi guys, it's time to look at some more Vai inspired licks. If you remember my other Vai lesson, then you'll notice that things are a bit harder this time.

    I wanted to demonstrate the possibilities of creating interesting runs by mixing up alternate picking and occasional hammer-ons and pull-offs. Steve is always mixing legato and picking in this way and it sounds really good, especially in the Lydian mode as it creates this dreamy, cascading effect.

    If you take one thing from this lesson, you don't have to pick every note to get some exciting sounding fast runs. Take these ideas and apply them to your own licks and see how much further you can stretch your abilities by combining picking and legato in this way.
